Merlo

Ann-Cathrine Sigrid Ståhlberg about Merlo:

When birds migrate from their wintering grounds in Africa, some of them choose to rest on the island of Capri in Italy. After the long flight over the Mediterranean, they are tired and need to rest before flying on to northern Europe. On Mount Barbarossa there is a Swedish-Italian bird station where you ring the birds and study their orientation and physical well-being.
During my last work stay at San Michele, Axel Munthe's villa on the island of Capri, there was an orange tree on the balcony outside my apartment. Every morning there were some blackbirds in the tree. It was so beautiful, with the orange fruits and the black birds. It made me happy to have them company at breakfast, when I drank my Cappuccino and ate my freshly baked Cornetto. One day I drew what I saw and thought - This could be a beautiful pattern!

Merlo means Blackbird in Italian.
